Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Private John Stephen Goodman Webb (Service No:6840) enlisted in the AIF on 28 June 1916 as a Private with 75 Depot Battalion, and was attached to 11th Infantry Battalion on 9 November 1916 when he embarked with his Unit from Fremantle WA for Devonport on board HMAT A8 Argyllshire. Private Webb served on the Western Front, and on 19 September 1917 was WiA in Belgium - a GSW to his arm resulted in amputation of three fingers and an immobilised hand (Cottesloe RSL). Private Webb embarked from England for Fremantle on 15 February 1918 on board the Llanstephen Castle, and was atatched to 11th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 3 October 1918. In WWII, Private Webb served briefly in the ACMF with 5 Lines of Communication Signals (Service No:W93654) from 22 December 1942 to 1 January 1943.

John (aka as Stephen Webb) was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1891, second of three children of John Stephen Gordon Webb Snr (b1857 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Louisa Emma Nott (b1856 in Melbourne, Victoria). John Snr (a Photographer) and Louisa married in Melbourne in 1889, and in the early 1900s moved to Perth, Western Australia before settling in Cottesloe, Fremantle where John Snr was a Photographer. Louisa died in 1908 and John Snr was in Ceylon in 1924 when he died.

John worked as a Horse Driver and Farmer in Cottesloe before enlisting in the AIF in 1916 and, following his Discharge in 1918, was working as a Motor Mechanic in 1919 when he married Lydia Marie Hitchin (b1892 in Edwardstown, South Australia). John and Lydia lived in Cottesloe, where John was a Motor Mechanic and a Lineman with the Postmaster General's Department. In the early 1930s the family moved to Merredin, where they raised their family and John worked as a Lineman until he retired in the 1950s. John died in 1962 and Lydia in 1976.
