Biography

William Richard BRISBIN was born at Rockhampton on 3 March 1888 and was educated in Mt Morgan (one of the sons of John & Annie Brisbin (Brisbane) originally from Tyrone, Northern Ireland. John & Annie arrived in Queensland 6 June 1879. Initially employed on the railway line between Clermont and Emerald. They later settled in Mt Morgan where he became the Furnaces boss at the Mount Morgan Mine). Willliam was one of three of the Brisbin family that joined and served in WW1 along with  2008 Gnr. John Henry Ferguson Brisbin (/explore/people/362183) who returned from active service and 785 Pte. Lowry McClelland Brisbin (/explore/people/362183) who was killed in action at the landing at Gallipoli

He married Florence Elsie McLEAN, on 19 March 1911. Elsie (as she was known) was partially of Chinese origin. They had six children, Adelaide, Joyce, William, Lowry, Harold and Allen. He was a stockman in the Richmond area of Queensland.

On 10 Apr 1916 at Hughenden he enlisted with the 5/47th Infantry Battalion as a Private #2394. He went to England at Salisbury Plains to complete his training. He left for France and went into action at Messines in 1917 where he was severely wounded in the throat (shot through the larnyx) and was returned to England. He was pronounced medically unfit and returned to Australia and discharged on the 3 January 1918. He was never able to speak propery again.

He was subsequently issued with the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

He passed away in the Townsville Hospital on 24 March 1965.
