RICHARD RODNEY GIBBS was born on 5th September, 1892, at Shepparton, Victoria, the son of Mr. William and Mrs. Sarah Gibbs. He was educated at the Brighton Grammar School and joined the Bank’s staff at Melbourne on 1 st June, 1910.

Richard Gibbs enlisted on 17th August, 1914, and left Australia as a member of the 7th Battalion, A.I.F. He served with that battalion in Egypt, and was promoted to sergeant. Later he joined the South Wales Borderers, and fought at Gallipoli. For a time he was with the West African Frontier Force in the Western Soudan. Rejoining the South Wales Borderers, he was promoted to captain on 24th October, 1918.
