GILBERT EDGAR HAYNE, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albion Hayne, was born at Ipswich, Queensland, on 18th April, 1888. He was educated at the Boys' Grammar School at Ipswich, and entered the service of the Bank at Brisbane on 23rd February, 1909. His subsequent transfers were to Eumundi in December, 1910; Ipswich, 1911; Brisbane, 1913; and Rockhampton, June, 1915.

He enlisted in October of that year, and was eventually promoted to the rank of sergeant in the Australian Army Pay Corps.
