World War 1
Frank arrived in France via Egypt on 4 April 1916 as a reinforcement for the 11th Battalion. He was attached to the 2nd Field Survey Company from July 1916 to August 1917 and went on leave for six weeks to the UK between August and October 1917. He was then attached to the 4th Field Survey Company from November 1917 to May 1918. During this time the 11th Battalion experienced heavy fighting in several costly battles on the Western Front.
On 1 June 1918, Frank transferred to the Australian Flying Corps and was posted to No. 2 School of Military Aeronautics (SMA) at Oxford and appointed as a Cadet for training as Flying Officer (Pilot).
The war ended on 11 November 1918 and Frank's cadetship was terminated a month later. He was posted back to the 11th Infantry Battalion as a Private.
A trainee teacher at Claremont Teachers' College in Perth before enlisting, he took advantage of General Monash's education programme for soldiers waiting to be shipped home and attended a six-month teacher's training course at Edinburgh Provincial Training Centre from February to August 1919.
He arrived in Fremantle on 4 November 1919 on HMAT Port Sydney and was discharged on 3 January 1920 in Perth.
World War 2
On 20 January 1941 while teaching in Jarrahdale, WA, Frank re-enlisted as a Private and served as a Field Surveyor. He moved up through the ranks and was promoted to Warrant Officer Class 2 on 27 September 1941.
On 1 June 1942 Frank was transferred to the Australian Army Education Service and appointed Education Officer, Headquarters Western Training Centre in Perth. He was promoted to Lieutenant on 8 July 1942. A month later he was posted to Northam. He was promoted to Captain on 18 February 1944. He was placed on the Retired List on 24 October 1944.
