Biography contributed by Westminster School

Daniel Digan (1874-1919) was a soldier born in Tullamore, Ireland who served in the 48th battalion. Digan had originally signed up to serve in the Australian army on the 5th of December, 1915. He was put out of commission in 1917 after being shot in the face at Messines and losing his sight in both eyes.  He was deemed unfit for general and home service. Though how exactly he died is unknown, it is presumed he died of infection despite having two healthy eye sockets. Daniel Digan was unmarried and had no children, and worked as a labourer before he went to the war. Digan was buried at Karrakatta Cemetery & Crematorium, Perth by his sister who may have engraved his tombstone. Daniel was presumed to have lived in East Perth after serving.
