JAMES KINGSLEY GORRELL was born at Unanderra, New South Wales, on 3rd October, 1891, the son of Alderman J. W. Gorrell, of Wollongong, New South Wales, and Mrs. Gorrell. He was educated at the Wollongong District School, and entered the Bank’s service in that town on 22nd January, 1910. A few days later he was transferred to Waverley, near Sydney; then to Campbelltown, as assistant; and in November, 1913, he was sent to Newcastle, New South Wales.
James Kingsley Gorrell enlisted on 4th August, 1915, in the 1st Australian Light Horse Field Ambulance. He embarked for Egypt, arriving on 28th May, 1916, and served throughout the Sinai and Palestine campaigns, being promoted to sergeant on 1st November, 1918. He also rendered service in Egypt during the disturbances early in 1919, and left there for England on 1st May, of that year.
