Clarence Saunders was born in St Arnaud, Victoria circa 1894. When he enlisted at Perth aged 22 years 10 months, he was a labourer and Presbyterian. He was described as being 5 feet 5 inches tall, and having a chest measurement of 33-36 inches, fair complexion hazel eyes and fair hair. His next of kin was his mother, Jeannie Wallace (her second marriage) of Northam. Upon enlistment on the 1.2.16, he was allocated Service Number 5193. A Private, he was appointed to the 16/11 reinforcements. Clarence embarked at Fremantle on HMAT Shropshire A9 on the 31.1.16. Posted to D Company in France on the 13.8.16, he was appointed a driver on the 29.7.1918. On the 26.11.18 he was admitted to hospital with influenza. Still sick on the 2.1.19, he was returned to Australia on the 13.1.19 per Berrima and discharged on the 8.4.19. Clarence died on the 2.7.1959, aged 66, and is buried in Karrakatta Cemetery Presbyterian Portion JA grave 0639.
