Private Alfred Charles Morriss (Service No:2432) enlisted in the AIF on 4 September 1916 and was attached to 39th Infantry Battalion when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Plymouth (via Sierra Leone) on board HMAT A17 Port Lincloln on 20 October 1916. Private Morriss served on the Western Front, and was attached to 3rd Machine Gun Battalion on 12 June 1919 when he embarked from England for Melbourne on board the Themistocles, for Discharge on 28 September 1919. He served in the ACMF in WWII (A/Sergeant; Service No:V376023) as a Lineman attached to Australian LoC Signals (PMG) from 2 May 1942 to 17 January 1947.
Alf was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1898, seventh of thirteen children of William (Bill) Alexander Morriss (b1863 in Queenstown, Victoria) and Emily Isabel Charles (b1867 in Lancashire, England) - Emily had immigrated with her parents and siblings in the mid 1860s. Bill (a Railways Labourer) and Emily married in 1886 in Melbourne, and lived there and in Dimboola and Locksley. Bill worked for the Railways - he and Emily settled in Frankston in the mid 1920s.
Alf served in the Senior Cadets and was a Labourer in Locksely in 1916 when he enlisted in the AIF. Following his Discharge, Alf worked as a Postal Linesman with the Postmaster Generals Department in Wonthaggi, and in 1937 in Yea, married Mary Ellen Teresa Collins (b1903 in Yea, Victoria). Alf and Mary lived in Korumburra and Locksley - Alf was a Lineman/Postal Employee with the PMGs Department. Following his Discharge from the ACMF in 1947, Alf and Mary settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Alf worked for the PMGs Department as a Linesman, Line Foreman and Line Inspector until retirement in 1963. Alf died in 1981 and Mary in 2007.
