The Minmi Roll of Honour has 79 names inscribed of those who returned home from The Great War.

The 14th name inscribed is Private Thomas Jackson Winterbottom.

On the 13th October 1953 the ashes were cremated at Newcastle Memorial Park, N.S.W. of Private Thomas Jackson Winterbottom, 4th Australian Pioneer Battalion (Reg No-2328), labourer from "Bonnie Doon", Maitland Road, Minmi, New South Wales and The Esplanade, Swansea, N.S.W., age 65 years 9 months. Location of Ashes - Rest Pavilion D/118.

Born at Minmi, New South Wales on the 23rd December 1887 to John Thomas, died 22.11.1918, Minmi, N.S.W., age 62, buried at Minmi Cemetery, N.S.W., Right Hand Side, Section 02, Plot 053), from "Bonnie Doon", Maitland Road, Minmi, N.S.W., and Janet T Winterbottom nee Hunter, died 20.4.1912, Minmi, N.S.W., age 47, mother of 5, sleeping at Minmi Cemetery, N.S.W., Right Hand Side, Section 02, Plot 053, from "Bonnie Doon", Maitland Road, Minmi, N.S.W., Thomas enlisted on the 31st May 1915 as James Austin with the 13th Battalion, age 27 years 5 months, at Liverpool, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A9 Shropshire on the 20th August 1915.
Admitted to hospital from Gallipoli 4.12.1915 (otitis media - middle ear infection).

Taken on Strength 4th Australian Pioneer Battalion 16.3.1916.

Proceeded on leave from 11.10.1917 to 24.10.1917.

Wounded in action - 1.7.1918 (GSW left hip,mild).

Commenced return to Australia 15.1.1919.

Thomas arrived home on the 2nd March 1919, being discharged medically unfit (deafness) on the 11th July 1919.

Received all 3 War Medals.

Not officially commemorated.

Thomas’s name has also been inscribed on the Minmi St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church Roll of Honour.

I don’t know if it possible to place poppies at Thomas’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Older brother Joseph Henry Winterbottom, born 3.8.1885, Helensburgh, New South Wales, single gas service layer (Newcastle Gas & Coke Company, Ltd), from "Bonnie Doon", Maitland Road, Minmi, New South Wales, enlisted 17.8.1914, age 29 years, Sydney, N.S.W., an Original Anzac, 2nd Battalion, Reg No-575, unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board Transport A23 Suffolk on the 18th October 1914, disembarked Alexandria, Egypt 2.12.1914, landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula, (Anzac Cove), on the Sunday of the 25th April 1915. His rifle prowess made him a sniper. Promoted to Sergeant 25.1.1916, wounded in action 23.7.1916 - (GSW abdomen), DOW 24.7.1916 at the 3rd Australian Casualty Clearing Station, France, Battle of Pozieres, age 30 years 11 months, resting at Puchevillers British Cemetery, France. Plot II Row A Grave 43, memorialised at parent's gravesite Minmi Cemetery, N.S.W. - Right Hand Side, Section 02, Plot 053. For more detail, see my post on the 5th December 2025.
