Albert was mortally wounded by a shell in the arms and legs on legs on the 5 July 1916, and died of his wounds the same day.

His brothers, 3280 Pte Ernest Sidney Smith, 28th Bn, died of wounds, 8 August 1916 and 2452 Pte Arthur Henry Smith, 51st Bn was killed in action, 3 September 1916.

Albert’s father had died in 1898, when Albert was barely five years of age. His mother lived in Holyoake Western Australia and Albert and his brothers were workers in the timber industry of Western Australia.
