Samuel Ernest BURLEY. Sergeant 496, 20th Australian Infantry (AIF) killed in action 10th October 1917 age 27. Son of Thomas Edward and Lucy of 18. Park Avenue, Long Eaton, Nottinghamshire and brother of Thomas who fell in 1918. he is commemorated on his parents memorial at St James, Normanton on Soar, Leicestershire and also on the Menin Gate Memorial Ypres, Belgium

He was 27 and the son of Thomas Edward and Lucy Burley, of 18, Park Avenue, Long Eaton. England.
He is not honoured on the Long Eaton War Memorial, but a number of Australian WWI casualties are.
Long Eaton is a town in the Erewash district of Derbyshire, England, just north of the River Trent about 7 miles south-west of Nottingham and some 8.5 miles south-east of Derby.
Long Eaton has been part of Erewash borough since 1 April 1974, after Long Eaton Urban District was dissolved. It was formerly in the county of Nottinghamshire
Long Eaton is located in Derbyshire, forming part of the border with Nottinghamshire and very close to Leicestershire. The Local Government Commission for England (1958–1967) recommended that Long Eaton become part of an enlarged Nottingham City Council. Earlier, the original draft of the Local Government Act 1972 had proposed moving Long Eaton into Nottinghamshire.

His father was born in 1853 at Stagsden, Bedfordshire and his mother Lucy Charles was born in 1857 at Normanton on Soar; they were married in 1883 at Derby and had 7 children; sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood. Their surviving children were Margaret b 1876 Derby, Samuel b 1890 Derby and Thomas Charles b 1897 Normanton on Soar. In the 1911 census the family are living at Normanton on Soar and are shown as Thomas Edward Burley 58 years a roadman, living with his wife Lucy 54 years and their son Thomas Charles, 14 years a farm boy. Samuel Edward emigrated in 1911; he is shown as a passenger on the ship 'Commonwealth' which left London on 21st June 1911 to travel to Australia Samuel is shown as being 20 years of age.
He enlisted on 12th March 1915, giving his age as 25 years and 1 month, stating his occupation as a miner and his next of kin as his father Thomas Edward Burley of 18 Park Avenue, Long Eaton. He served with the 20th battalion Australian Infantry. He embarked from Sydney on 26th June 1915 on HMAT 'Berrima' to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force. Landing in Gallipoli, he suffered from dysentery and was transferred to Lemnos where,following treatment he returned to Gallipoli on 11th November 1915. He left Gallipoli and disembarked at Mudros on 9th January 1916. He left Mudros on 18th March 1916 and disembarked at Marseilles, France on 25th March 1916. He was promoted to Sergeant on 9th August 1916 and was killed in action on at Zonnebeke where he was buried. He grave was lost.
His brother, Private Thomas Charles Burley enlisted at Loughborough and served with British forces, the 1/5th battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He was killed in action on 23rd September 1918 and is buried in Roisel Communal Cemetery Extension grave reference II.J.1
They are remembered on the War Memorial in St James' Church, Normanton on Soar.
