Charles Edmond Clarke only joined the 40th Battalion in France in late November 1916. He was mortally wounded less than a fortnight later on 13 December 1916. Charles died six days later on 19 December 1916 from a gunshot wound to the side of the head, and was buried in the Trois Arbres Cemetery, Steenwerck, France.
His younger brother, 1817 Pte. Claude Ernest Clarke 12th Battalion AIF, served for over four years but died of illness after his return to Launceston in 12 September 1919, aged 31.
Their mother was Mrs. Ellen Clarke, an elderly widow, who had also lost another adopted son, 3938 Pte. William Arthur Clarke 12th Battalion AIF, who had died of sickness 8 May 1916., aged 22.
Ellen died in 1921, before she could receive the medals of Charles. The medals went to his older sister Rowena.
A nephew, son of Claude’s sister Rowena, also died at Pozieres in 1916, 3292 Pte. Charles Henry Hayward 12th Battalion AIF.
