Murray McCheyne Souter

Murray was the youngest son of the Reverend William and Margaret Souter.  He had seven surviving older brothers.

The information about Murray’s life that follows, was sourced from Meg Souter’s research findings in “The Souter Family – descendents of the Reverend William Souter” 2009.

At the time of Murray’s birth, the family had moved from country Victoria, and was living in Melbourne in the Coburg area, as his father had been appointed as Chaplain to the Hospitals and Benevolent Institutes of Melbourne. This included Pentridge Prison.

Meg reports that Murray’s early working life was with brothers on their farm in Cathkin Victoria, and also brother Donald’s farming enterprise at “Dunhelen” in Broadmeadows.

He enlisted for World War One in 1916, and family history states that he served in France as a munitions officer with the 4th Pioneer Battalion, and was demobbed in July 1919.

Murray married Lillian May Fuller in 1925, and they did not have children

Later on he worked a fruit block at Tongala, whilst also holding a job as a council employee. Then it was on to Gisborne where he worked with a wool firm, prior to his retirement.

After his  wife Lillian was killed in a traffic accident he returned to live  around Tongala and Kyabram.

He lived to 88 years of age.
