Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Served and suffered during The Great War, now resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

91 years ago today, on the Saturday afternoon of the 31st January 1931, Private Edward Joseph Ryan, Administrative Headquarters (Reg No-3714A), labourer from 26 Hunter Street, West Maitland, New South Wales and Cessnock, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 42. CATHOLIC 1-I Spec. 20.

Born at Largs, New South Wales on the 14th October 1888 to Timothy Edward and Ellen Ryan of 26 Hunter Street, West Maitland, New South Wales; husband of Mary Ryan nee McDonald (married 1926, Sydney, N.S.W., died?), Edward enlisted January 1917 with the 1st Australian Pioneer Battalion at West Maitland, N.S.W.

Wounded in action - 29.3.1918 (GSW or shapnel left arm and back), 25.8.1918 (GSW or shapnel right thigh).

Edward returned home January 1920, being discharged on the 1st March 1920.

Mr. Ryan’s name has been inscribed on the Cessnock War Memorial and the Hexham J & A Brown Workshops Roll of Honor (photo, unveiled on the 7th October 1916, 19 names originally inscribed, 31 names now inscribed, 7 Fallen).

There is no indication inscribed on Edward’s headstone plaque of his service with the 1st A.I.F., so I have placed poppies in remembrance of his sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Contact with descendants would be greatly appreciated.

Lest We Forget.
