James enlisted 7 March, 1916 along with his brothers, Ernest John and Herbert James Button. James Button and his brothers all enlisted on the same day with the 40th Battalion. James and his brothers, Ernest John and Herbert James left Hobart on 1 July, 1916. Ernest John and Herbert James both returned from the war and worked on farms around the Perth and Longford area.
James was seen to be lying dead in a shell hole on the 13 October 1917, during an assault at Passchendaele, and although searches were made for him afterwards, his remains were never found.
His older brother 30 Private Alfred Button Tasmanian Mounted Infantry had been killed in action in South Africa 9 February 1900 age 22.
