"PRIVATE H. E. SCHMIDT.
Mrs. E. H. Schmidt, of Curramulka, whose second son, Private H. E. Schmidt, enlisted shortly after the war started, has received the following communication:—
Major-General Sir H. V. Cox, commanding 4th Australian Division, congratulates Private Harold Schmidt, 16th Battalion, A.I.F, on his gallant and valuable work as a scout and dispatch runner under very heavy fire during operations between August 8 and August 12, 1916.
Private Schmidt has been awarded the Military Medal. Mrs. Schmidt received by the last English mail a letter with the ribbon of the Military Medal enclosed, also a copy of a further message of congratulation received by her son from Major-General Sir H. V. Cox, again commending him for his gallantry under heavy fire at the big battle of Mouquet Farm on August 29 and August 30. Private Schmidt, who is only 19 years of age, is highly respected by his many friends in Curramulka, who naturally feel proud of the high honor he has won." - from the Adelaide Chronicle 03 Feb 1917 (nla.gov.au)
