Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

John was the only son of a widowed mother, Catherine Ann Hedley, of Glen Innes, NSW, who could never discover the fate of her boy, despite her best efforts. John was reported wounded and missing during the 49th Battalion's assault on the fearsome Mouquet Farm strongpoint during early September 1916. He has no known grave, nor was any information forthcoming as to his fate.
