Sergeant John Thomas Quill (Service No:W84738) initially served in the AIF in WWI as a Private (Service No:2382) with 43rd Infantry Battalion (1 June 1916 - 23 April 1918) on the Western Front. Private Quill was WiA in France on three occasions - 4 October 1917, GSW; 26 May 1918, Gas and 6 August 1918, GSW. Sergeant Quill served in the ACMF with 12 Battalion (Jarrah) VDC from 9 May 1942 to 15 October 1945. Son Jack served in the RAAF (Service No:80965).
John was born in Mooroopna, Victoria in 1890, second of eight children of Michael Quill (b1848 in County Cork, Ireland) and Mary Mellon (b1862 in Woodstock, Victoria). Michael arrived in Melbourne, Victoria in 1879 on board the Hankow, and he and Mary married in 1886 in Mooroopna, where they settled and raised their family. Michael worked as a Labourer, Farmer, Dealer and Cattle Buyer until his death in 1902. Mary and her children moved to Western Australia, settling at Emu Swamp in Darkan via Collie.
John was a Farmer in Darkan via Collie when he enlisted in the AIF in 1916, and following his Discharge returned to Darkan and work as a Farmer. In 1921 he married Ellen (Nell) Annie Symonds (b1894 in Albany, Western Australia) - Nell worked in Perth as a Shop Assistant. John and Nell lived in Darkan and Duranillin, where they raised their son, and John was a Farmer until his death in 1959. Nell died in 1980.

Son of Michael Quill and Mary Quill nee Melton of Darkan, WA. Brother of Daniel Quill who commenced return to Australia on 1 June 1919 having served with the 28th Battalion.
