Mr. James Hamilton Swanson, who died last week at Fisher-street, Norwood, was one of the foundation members of the South African Soldiers' Association. He was only 46, and he enlisted as a private in the first contingent for South Africa in 1899. After completing his engagement he enlisted again and sailed with the sixth contingent as a sergeant, remaining in South Africa until the end of the war in 1902. In the Great War, Mr Swanson saw service with the 10th and 50th Battalions, and with the First Battery, A.F.A. In the last named unit held the rank of warrant officer. Mr. Swanson left a widow and four children. For over 20 years he was in the service of the South Australian railways.

Previously served two years in active forces and one year with reserve in South Australia.
Also served as Sergeant with 6th Contingent.
Enlisted AIF July 1915, Sergeant 50th Battalion, transferred 4th Field Bakery March 1916, promoted Staff Sergeant 1st Field Bakery, discharged Australia October 1919.
