Biography

William worked as an engine driver before the war, and married Annie Isabel Ballard 11 October 1912. He enlisted on 1 March 1916 at the age of 30. 1916 was also the year in which William and Annie's six-month-old son, William Athley died of meningitis.

Willilam embarked with the 33rd Infantry Battalion in August 1916 on HMAT Miltiades. He was briefly taken on strength in October 1916 by another Western Australian battalion, the 44th Infantry Battalion, before returning to the 33rd in November of the same year.

William returned to Australia 9 December 1918.
