Horace Beck enlisted on 7 February 1916 at the age of 22 years 7 months, single and recording his employment as a labourer. He was appointed to 10th Machine Gun Company.
Horace embarked on HMAT Ascanius from Melbourne on 27 May 1916 for England and joined his Company in France on 22 November 1916. He reported to hospital sick on 27 January 1917, rejoined his company on 8 February and 2 months later was promoted to Lance Corporal.
On 7 June that same year, here received a gun shot wound to the left forearm and was evacuated to Weymouth England. In November 1917, Horace was appointed as Cadre (Training Officer) for the Machine Gun Training Depot, located in Long Bridge Devon and held a similar role, in Tidworth England from 4 September 1918.
Horace finally embarked on HT Kashmir on 9 March 1019, arriving in Melbourne on 30 April 1919, being discharged soon afterwards.
Horace reenlisted during WW2 on 24 February 1942, only one week after the first bombing of Darwin. It is recorded that he was then 48 years of age and his occupation was a fuel merchant. Married to Vera Claudia Beck, his address was 18 Nicholas Street Newtown, just 3 houses from his parental home at 24 Nicholas Street.
He was appointed to the Volunteer Defence Corps and following attendance at a Leaders School in Rowville, was promoted to Sergeant, a position he held till his discharge on 18 October 1945.
