Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

232 Pte Bert Paul of the 7th Battalion, was born in Cobram during 1894 and was one of the earliest to enlist on the 4th September 1914. Bert Paul was wounded in action at the Landing on Gallipoli when he was shot through the right shoulder. He rejoined his unit on Anzac in early July 1915 before he was again severely wounded during the bitter fighting at Lone Pine in early August 1915. On this occasion he suffered gunshot wounds to the neck and left eye. He was evacuated to Egypt where doctors were forced to remove his left eye and later operated on him to remove a bullet lodged in his throat. He was returned to Australia 16th April 1916 as permanently unfit for further service. He was given a pension of 3 pounds per fortnight to live on when he returned. Amazingly Bert Paul tried to enlist again in July 1917, with one eye, but was by 1918 caught out and ruled to be medically unfit for any further service. His brother Ernest Clifton Paul died of wounds at Gallipoli.
