75 years ago today, on the Friday afternoon of the 15th July 1949, Private Arthur Edward Jones, 34th Battalion (Reg No-2102), master baker and bread carter from Junction Street, The Junction, New South Wales and 30 Robert Street, Linwood, Wickham, N.S.W. (1920) and 55 Fleming Street, Wickham, N.S.W., father of five (Thelma E, born 1906, Arthur J, born 1908, Ethel M, born 1911, Phyllis E, born 1914, Marjorie Alice, born 3.5.1920, Wickham, N.S.W., died 4.7.1920, Wickham, N.S.W., age 9 weeks, a Bud in Heaven, sleeping here), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 67. METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) D SW. 42.
Born at Bristol, England on the 4th April 1882 to William James and Jane Jones or James Theophilus and Mary Jane Jones; husband of Elspeth Wilson Jones nee Charlton, married 1905, Merewether, N.S.W., died 3.7.1965, Hamilton, N.S.W., age 82, sleeping here, Arthur enlisted on the 18th July 1915 with the 30th Battalion (father of 4), at Liverpool, N.S.W.
After 26 days, discharged at wife's request.
Reenlisted-22.3.1916, Newcastle, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A68 Anchises on the 24th August 1916.
Wounded in action - 1.6.1917 (GSW left hand), 4.6.1918 (shell wound to head), 16.7.1918 (GSW forehead, mild).
Admitted to hospital 2.11.1917 (trench feet).
Granted leave to England from 14.3.1918 to 5.4.1918.
Invalided to England 20.7.1918.
Commenced return to Australia 15.1.1919.
Arthur arrived home on the 6th March 1919, being discharged medically unfit on the 13th April 1919.
Mr. Jones’s name has been inscribed on the Junction Soldiers' Memorial, The Junction Methodist Church & Sabbath School Roll of Honour.
I have placed poppies at Arthur’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
