Citation - Meritorious Service Medal reads:

A most capable and efficient R.Q.M. Sergeant who has shown exceptional devotion to duty under all circumstances. During the period September 1918, his Battalion was in the line in the vicinity of Peronne. In the absence of a regular Battalion Quarter Master, this Warrant Officer bore the brunt of the responsibility for regulating the whole of the supply of the Battalion, and despite the many difficulties occasioned by enemy shell-fire and bombing activity, succeeded in the highest degree in maintaining a smooth and efficient service and with a minimum amount of inconenience to the troops. Again while the Battalion was resting in the month September-October, 1918, R.Q.M.S. Vanston by his energy greatly facilitiated the comfort and well-being of the troops, by reason of the excellent arrangements he made and good continued judgment shown by him. R.Q.M.S. Vanston has long service both in the line and subsequently in the Q.M. branch, and has always succeeded in a marked degree in reaching a very high standard. London Gazette on 3 June 1919, page 6918, position 70. Commonwealth of Australia Gazette on 6 October 1919, page 1461, position 42
