Alfred was of German decent, born in Warracknabeal VIC the son of Alwin Kampfhenkel & Camellia Martha Anne Gifford on 3 Jun 1912

 

From Sep 1940 to Mar 1942 he served as a Trooper with C Squadron of the 6 Division (Cavalry) Reconnaissance Regiment, fighting against the Italians, Germans & Vicy Franch

 

Returning to Australia on 30 Mar 1942, he marched out to NT Force on extended leave without pay, in order to commence duties with North Australia Railway

 

He discharged from AIF service on 24 Jan 1944 in order to continue employment with the NAR
