Son of Samuel Veal and Jane Richards Veal nee Roberts of Colorado, USA.

Next of kin given as his sister Mary Jane Tippett of Eureka Street, Ballarat East, Victoria. 

Prior to enlisting James was an apprentice jockey with Alec Taylor of Burrumbeet, Victoria for four years.

Commenced return to Australia on 12 March 1918 aboard HT Field Marshall disembarking on 22 May 1918
