Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

John was the son of William and the late Frances Elliott, of Mundaroo, Tumbarumba, New South Wales. His mum had passed away when he was 13 years of age.

John was born in Tumbarumba in 1890 and enlisted at Kensington NSW on 24th September 1914. He was placed in the 3rd Battalion and joined his younger brother Henry who had enlisted three weeks earlier. Illness prevented him from taking part in the 25th April Gallipoli landing and he did not rejoin his battalion at Gallipoli until May 1915. He served for various periods at Gallipoli and was with his battalion at the time of the ANZAC evacuation in December 1915.

In France on 13 July 1916, he was promoted to Corporal, just prior to the Pozieres offensive. At Pozieres on the 24 July 1916 John was seriously wounded with GSW to the head, shoulder and leg. He was transferred to England and admitted to the 1st Southern General Hospital in Birmingham but died from his wounds on 15th September 1916. He is buried in Lodge Hill cemetery Birmingham.

The matron of the hospital wrote and gave his sister all the details of his wounds and stay in hospital.

His brother, 717 Sergeant Henry James Hamilton Elliott 3rd Battalion, was killed in action, 20 July 1916, only four days before John's wounding.

Another brothers: 2896 Pte Allen Charles Elliott 55th Battalion, returned to Australia, 5 July 1917.
