Driver Ernest Albert Kempster (Service No:22202) enlisted in the AIF on 23 August 1915, and was attached to 23rd Field Artillery Brigade on 20 May 1916 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Plymouth on board HMAT A7 Medic. Driver Kempster served on the Western Front as a Private, Gunner and Driver attached to 8th Field Artillery Brigade, and embarked from England for Adelaide on 11 May 1919 on board HT Zealandia. Driver Kempster was attached to 8th Field Artillery Brigade at Discharge on 10 August 1919. 

Ernie was born in Lincolnsfield, South Australia in 1893, tenth of eleven children of Charles Kempster (b1848 in Buckinghamshire, England) and Christina MacDonald (b1851 in Fifeshire, Scotland). Christina immigrated in 1853, arriving in Port Adelaide on board the Hercules, and Charles arrived in 1855 on board the Punjab. Charles and Christina married in 1871 at Bungaree, Clare in South Australia - Charles was a Farmer at Magpie Creek in Clare. Charles and Christina lived at Magpie Creek, Magill, Angle Grove, Keilli, Kadina, Lincolnsfield and Bute, where Charles was a Farmer. By 1912 the family had settled in Adelaide, where Charles worked as a Labourer.

Ernie worked as a Butcher in Adelaide before enlisting in the AIF, and in 1920 in Adelaide he married his first wife Lavinia Jane Pearce (b1902 in Perth, Western Australia). Following Lavinia's death in 1925, Ernie (a Widower with two small children) remarried in  1928 to Selma Marta Wuttke (b1906 in Seppeltsfield, Barossa, South Australia). Ernie and Selma settled in Adelaide, where they raised their family and Ernie worked as a Tramways Motorman. Ernie died in 1958 and Selma in 1992.
