Eldest of three brothers who served in WWI, Private Charles Edmond Gwynne (Service No:7239) enlisted in the AIF on 23 October 1916, and was attached to 16th Infantry Battalion on 29 January 1917 when he embarked with his Unit from Fremantle for Devonport on board HMAT A28 Militiades. Private Gwynne was WiA in France on 26 September 1917 (GSW back and arm - severe) and evauated to England. On 8 August 1918 Private Gwynne embarked from England for Fremantle on board HT Carpentaria, and was attached to 16th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 1 November 1918.
Charles was born in Hammond via Eurelia, South Australia in 1882, fourth of eleven children of Andrew Gwynne (b1847 in Montgomeryshire, Wales) and Margaret (Maggie) Mooyart Morrow (b1854 in Adelaide, South Australia). Andrew immigrated in 1854, arriving with his parents and siblings in Port Adelaide on board the Ramillies. Andrew was a Blacksmith in Wollaston in 1871 when he and Maggie married at Port Wakefield. They lived in Balaklava, Pinda, Hammond and Eurelia - Andrew was a Farmer. In the early 1900s the family moved to Western Australia, and settled in Woodanilling via Katanning where they raised their family and Andrew was a Farmer. Andrew and Maggie later lived in Jolimont, and then on Rosedale Farm at Doodlakine.
Charles worked in Fremantle as a Sheet Iron Worker (Y Instone & Co Fremantle), and as a Storeman in Subiaco before appointment as Secreatry to the Woodanilling Road Board in 1913. In 1915 Charles married Hilda Maude Bradbury (b1895 in Katanning, Western Australia) in Woodanilling, where they settled and raised their family and Charles was Secretary of the Woodanilling Road Board. Following his Discharge from the Army, Charles and Hilda lived in Tambellup and Katanning, where Charles was a Farmer. In the late 1930s Charles and Hilda returned to Woodanilling, where Charles was appointed Secretary to the Woodanilling Road Board. Charles died in 1954 and Hilda in 1959.
