Ernest's date of birth on his enlistment papers is 4 Jan 1902, noting the correct date is 4 Jan 2012. He was poorly educated and someone else has filled in his papers on his behalf, as shown by his scrawled signature. His age of 29 years is correct, so it was purely a mistake as he was within the stipulated age limits.
