Between 2 April 1919 and 2 September 1919 he took leave to gain extra experience in plumbing with W. Shaw & Co., Middlesbro-on-Tees.

Commenced return to Australia on 26 July 1919 aboard HT Demosthesis disembarking on 19 September 1919
