Son of Herbert Samuel Ottewill and Louise May Ottewill nee Stallibrass of Dulwich Hill, NSW later of Church Street, Newtown, NSW.
Brother of Frederick Edmund Ottewill who was killed in action on 2-5 October 1917 while serving with the 1st Battalion and has no known grave. His name appears on Panel 7 Menin Gate, Ypres
On 12 July 1917 Herbert married Grace Evelyn Overgage in St. Peters Church, Parkstone, Dorset, England. Vicar Reginald E. Adderley officiated.
