Hermann left Melbourne on board HMAT Armidale on 12 February 1915 bound for Gallipoli, serving there in 1915 and Egypt and Palestine 1916 – 1918 with the 9th Light Horse Regiment. He suffered a slight gunshot wound to the head at Gaba Tepe on 20 March 1915 and was not able to return to duty until 8 July. A bout of influenza entailed treatment at the 1st Australian Stationary Hospital for a week in April 1916. Hermann was hospitalised with tonsillitis at the 3rd Light Horse Field Ambulance in February 1917 and later in March at the 14th General Hospital in Egypt with cholecystitis. He was sent back to the Dardenelles on 27 November 1918. Hermann embarked the Port Sydney at Kantara, Egypt on 5 March 1919 to return to Australia where he was discharged on 12 June.
