Served during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
51 years ago today, on the 26th December 1972, Bombardier John Aynescombe Anscombe, 7th Australian Field Artillery Brigade (Reg No-18830), mercantile broker (manufacturer's agent), also importer & timber merchant from Union Bank Chambers, Newcastle, New South Wales and Kemp Street, Hamilton, N.S.W. and 5 Lemnos Parade, Newcastle, N.S.W. (1942), father of one (Rita Patricia Anscombe, born 3.10.1922, died 28.6.1965, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 42, sleeping at CATHOLIC 3-87. 2), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 85. CATHOLIC 3-103. 142.
Died on the 22nd December 1972 at Waratah, N.S.W. as Jon Aynescombe Anscombe.
Born at Walthamstow, Essex, London, England on the 3rd November 1887 to Alfred and Annie Anscombe of 30 Albany Road, Stroud Green, London North, England; husband of Rita Muriel Anscombe nee Gallagher (married 2.5.1921, Marrickville, N.S.W., died 1.8.1982, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 89, sleeping here), John enlisted on the 13th December 1915 at the Warren, Marrickville, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A8 Argyllshire on the 11th May 1916.
Granted leave to England from 10.1.1918 to 25.1.1918 and 13.1.1919 to 27.1.1919.
Commenced return to Australia 12.6.1919.
John arrived home on the 2nd August 1919, being discharged on the 17th September 1919.
Nothing located on Trove regarding enlistment, returning home, etc.
I have not located Mr. Anscombe’s name inscribed on any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.
I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at John’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
Also served 2nd A.I.F. - enlisted 13.4.1942, Newcastle, N.S.W., Volunteer Defence Corps, N154491, discharged as Temporary Captain 29.5.1945.
Not officially commemorated.
