Biography contributed by Sharyn Roberts

John Burgoyne Hudson who was killed in action in the Battle of the Somme on 25th October 1916 was the son of Mr. Charles Hudson. He was born in 1895 and was at the School in 1909 and 1910, winning the Witherby Scholarship in 1909. He was in his fourth year of Medicine when he enlisted. He left here in December 1914 in 14th Battalion. In Egypt he transferred to the A.M.C. and took part in the Landing on Gallipoli. He was severely wounded in May 1915 and was in hospital in Egypt and afterwards in England. He was subsequently discharged from the AIF as medically unfit, but obtained a commission as Lieutenant in the 4th Princess Alexandra of Wales Own Yorkshire Regiment and went to France early in 1916 and fought in the Battle of the Somme. He was killed instantaneously by a shell in the firing line close to the Butte de Warlencourt, and his Commanding Officer wrote; "He was a very brave officer, and had done most excellently. His men followed him and liked him."
