Biography contributed by Westminster School

Private Clarence Wood from Terowie, South Australia, was born on the 18th December 1890 in Hundred of Whyte, South Australia.

Clarence was a farmer before enlisting to join the army. He lived with his father, William Wood, mother Emily Hucks and his older brother, Gilbert Wood, all of which were Baptist. His older brother, Gilbert, also served in the army and enlisted on the same day. He enlisted at the age of 30. Both Gilbert and Clarence joined the same Battalion and embarked together on the same ship. Fortunately for Gilbert, he returned back home safely on the 30th June 1918 after serving two two years in the army.

Clarence enlisted on the 16th February 1916 at the age of 25. After enlisting, he and his unit, 32nd Battalion 6th Reinforcement, embarked from Adelaide on board HMAT A60 Aeneas on the 11th April 1916. He was later transferred to the 48th Battalion and promoted to the Private of that Battalion. After fighting for a year, Clarence was sadly reported Missing in Action on the 12th October 1917. Then, later on, reported Killed in Action on the same day. He died in Passchendaele Belgium at the age of 26.

Biography

Wood

In Loving Memory of our Dear Son and Brother,

Private Clarence Wood 48th Battalion 3012 AIF,

Who was Killed at Ypres Passchendaele on 12th October 1917

He left home, his native land,

to help Australia's gallant band,

His heart was brave, he knew no fear,

And Freedom's cause to him was dear.

His manly form resta in a foreign grave.

But his name will live with Australia's brave.

When I call you in the darkness,

With regret and love and pain,

Shall I never hear you answer,

Never hear you breathe my name?

Will the echo of my sighing

never cross your spirt sleep?

And though all the long forevers,

Will you never know I weep?

If I must endure the silence.

Wait with faith till life is past,

Will you meet me at the portal

When I come to you at last?

Ever remembered by his Loving Mother at Croydon,

and Family Terowie.

( shared by on behalf of all his family Felicity Wood)
