Robert Thomas Rule was born in Carnarvon on the 2.11.1897. His next of kin was his mother, Jessie Alexandriana Rule, of South Fremantle. She died at the Mt Henry Home on the 24.4.1967, aged 96 and was buried in Karrakatta Cemetery Presbyterian portion CC, grave 0362. Robert was a Private allocated Service Number 890 who served with the Imperial Camel Corps and the 10th Light Horse Regiment. He enlisted at Perth on the 8.1.15, aged 18 years 3 months. He was a butcher and Presbyterian. He was described as being 5 feet 6 inches tall, with a chest measurement of 34- 35¾ inches, dark complexion, brown eyes and dark brown hair. He first enlisted in 1915, then was discharged. He reenlisted on the 1.3.16 in the 3rd Australian Pioneer Battalion. Robert embarked at Fremantle on the 9.4.15 on HMAT Argyllshire A8. He served in Abbassia, the EEF, Ballah, Sinai Peninsula, Palestine, Moascar, Cairo and Alexandria. He spent time in hospital with bouts of measles, diarrhoea, enteritis and tonsilitis.
During 1917 and 1918, there was a series of episodes of inappropriate behaviour and him being absent without leave. This led to a Court Martial being held between the 30.5.18 – 1.6.18, with charges of breaking Camp, being AWL and losing by neglect his equipment and regimental necessities: the rifle, bayonet, scabbard, bandolier, oil bottle, water bottle, ground sheet, great coat, 2 blankets and 150 rounds of ammunition. Total cost: £8.0.6. His sentence was 18 months imprisonment and on the 25.7.19, a warrant was issued for Robert to be transferred to the Military Prison, Melbourne. He was still under arrest when he embarked at Kantara on the 2.8.19 on HT Delta for return to Australia. On the 9.8.19, he was admitted to Hospital at sea. With the end of the war, this sentence was suspended by AIF Headquarters, Cairo on the 10.8.19. Robert was discharged on the 26.7.19 and disembarked on the 26.8.19. In January 1922, he was convicted of stealing a quantity of food from the Bedford Hotel.
Robert reenlisted during World War 2 at Northam WA on the 3.5.1940, aged 42 years 5 months He was given the Service Number WX2579. His mother, Jessie Rule of Goderich St East Perth was again listed as his Next of Kin. Robert’s occupation was plate layer. This is a railway employee who inspects and maintains the railway track and its surrounding land. His permanent home address was in Wright St, Perth. Robert was discharged on the 16.5.1940 as medically unfit, not own default.
When he died at Royal Perth Hospital on the 16.6.1962, his home was listed as Boulder.
