Biography

"Official advice was received during the week that Pte. Patrick Joseph Maher (Grafton) was killed in action on April 17 in France. The deceased soldier enlisted on April 1, 1915, and after participating in the Gallipoli campaign, where he was wounded, went to France."from the Lismore Northern Star 10 May 1918 (nla.gov.au) 

"ROLL OF HONOR.

MAHER.— Killed in action in France, 16th April, Patrick Joseph, second youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Maher, 19 Duke street, Grafton, aged 24 years 3 weeks and 4 days.

A hero laid beneath the sod, With honor has returned to God.

He's laid aside his gun and sword And gone to claim his just reward. Inserted by his sorrowing father, mother, sisters, and brother.
