Private Kenneth George Hinchliffe (Service Nos:WX1703/WX5234) served in the AIF, initally from 4 to 10 March 1940 before re enlisting on 26 July 1940. Private Hinchliffe served with 2/28 Infantry Battalion in the Middle East, where he was WiA on 28 August 1941, and in 1942 was graded Nursing Orderly attached to 2/7 Australian General Hospital (AGH) at Buseilli. Private Hinchliffe served in Lae and Buna with 2/7 AGH from 7 August 1943 to 27 August 1945, and was Discharged on 30 March 1946. In the late 1950s he served briefly as Lance Corporal (Service No:WP37751) - graded Nuring Orderly.
Ken was born in Yorkshire, England in 1919, only child of Frank Hinchliffe (b1901 in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England) and his first wife Lillian Gill (b1899 in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England). Frank was a Soldier (Private; Regimental No:4492) with the Duke of Wellington's West Riding Regiment and Lillian a Weaver when they married in 1920 in Huddersfield. The family immigrated in 1925, arriving in Fremantle WA on board the Hobson's Bay. Frank and Lillian settled in Albany, where they raised their son and Frank worked as a Labourer and Lillian as a Weaver. The couple divorced in 1938 - Lillian returned to England, where she worked as a Nurse at Military Hospital Millbank in WWII before returning to Australia in 1948. Frank settled in Cottesloe, where he worked as a Laboure, and served in WWII (Corporal; Service No:WX5233). Frank later remarried, and post war worked as a Hospital Orderly with the Repatriation Department in Perth.
Ken was working as a Labourer when he enlisted in the Army in 1940, and followingg his Discharge in 1946, was in Perth in 1947 when he married Paulene Carmel Stuchbury (b1928 in Swan, Western Australia). Ken and Paulene settled in Perth, where Ken worked as a Tram Driver and Nurse before moving to Victoria in the early 1960s. Frank worked as a Repairer in Wandong before joing Victoria Railways (VGR) in Ballarat in the mid 1960s. Ken and Paulene separated in the early 1970s, and both moved to Melbourne - Ken worked as a Ganger and Machinery Attendant. Ken died in 1992 and Paulene in 2015.
