Born in 1899 in Melbourne Victoria, Tom was the fourth of seven children of John Kidd Stewart (b1861 in Ballarat, Victoria) and Martha Murphy (b1867 in Emerald, Victoria). John (a Bookbinder) and Martha married in 1887 in Melbourne, Victoria where they settled and raised their family. John worked as a Bookbinder until his death in 1923.
Tom started work in Melbourne in 1914 as an Apprentice Compositor for Mason Firth and McCutcheon, and served four years in Senior Cadets and one year in the Militia (Service No:46A) prior to enlisting in the AIF. He returned to work in Melbourne and was a Compositor in March 1921 when he enlisted in the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (ANMEF) as a Private (Service No:2046).
