After enlisting in February 1916, Albert embarked on 3 July 1916 arriving in Plymouth England on 2 September and was training in London until 13 December until he was proceeded to France and taken on strength to the 21st Battalion.
Albert was wounded by gun shot wound to the left thumb and 3rd finger on 13 March 1917 and subsequently transferred back to England on 21 March and later to Hammersmith Hospital in July 1917 to the orthopaedic unit. Later Albert was relocated to Hurdcott and Weymouth in England on 10 January 1918 his record shows that his thumb was ‘useless’ and it was determined to return Albert to Australia.
After his return, Albert has a record that he was Absent Without Leave for 1 and half hours from 10.30pm from Hospital on 20 June 1918 to which he was ‘admonished’.
