Corporal Frank Read Lidbury (Service No:754) enlisted in the AIF on 5 May 1916 as a Private attached to Artillery Reinforcements Maribyrnong and transferred to Australian Flying Corps (AFC) as an Air Mechanic on 13 September 1916 before embarking from Melbourne for Plymouth on 25 October 1916 on board HMAT A38 Ulysses. Corporal Lidbury transferred to 69th Squadron AFC on 2 March 1917 and was wounded in France on 2 October 1917. Evacuated to Beaufort War Hospital in England, Corporal Lidbury embarked from England for Fremantle on board Kaiser-i-Hind on 6 May 1919 and was Discharged on 21 August 1919.
Born in 1884 in London England, Frank was second of four children of John Dalton Lidbury (b1852 in London, England) and Mary Ann Whitmore (b1852 in London, England). John (an Insurance Clerk) and Mary (a Shop Assistant) married in Cubbington, Warwickshire in 1882 and settled in London where they raised their family and John worked as an Insurance Clerk.
Frank started work in London as a Warehouseman before enlisting in 1907 in the Royal Garrison Artillery (Gunner; Regimental No:26292). By 1911 Frank had joined his younger brother Walter in Western Australia - farming at Donnelly River near Manjimup. In 1915 Frank was a Motor Driver in Midland Junction and in 1916 at Blackwood in WA he married Ethel Florence Cook (b1895 in Kent, England) - Ethel worked as a Nursemaid and Domestic Servant before immigrating in 1913, arriving in Fremantle WA on board the Belgic. In 1916 Frank and Ethel were living at Mallalyup nr Balingup and Frank was working as a Mechanic when he enlisted in the AIF. Following his Discharge in 1919, Frank and Ethel settled in Perth, WA where they raised their family and Frank worked as a Mechanic and Salesman. Frank died in 1952 and Ethel in 1981.
