Narrative

Graham DUNCAN #14220 52nd Battalion

Graham Duncan was probably not related to the other Duncan brothers who are listed on the Kilcoy Memorial. Graham was born at “A.C.”Crossing, Kilcoy to parents Elizabeth and George Duncan, and attended the Stanley River School. He presented himself for enlistment in Brisbane on 9th October 1916. Graham had just turned 21 and he gave his occupation as farmer.

Graham was originally posted into the 11th Depot Battalion at Enoggera. He applied for leave in November 1916 to travel home to see his family before embarking for overseas. When he returned from leave, Graham was allocated to the 8th reinforcements of the 52nd Battalion. He had a studio photograph taken in Brisbane, a print of which is in the collection of the Australian War Memorial.

During December, Graham became ill and was admitted to the “Wattlebrae” Ward at the Brisbane General Hospital. His family were sent for and were by his side when he died of cerebrospinal meningitis on 8th January 1917.

Graham was buried at the Toowong Cemetery. His family received a Memorial Plaque in 1922.
