Add my storyBiography contributed by Ian Lang
John Rackley was the son of John and Jane Rackley of Logan Road Mount Gravatt. At the time of his enlistment on 28th January 1918 he had just turned 18 and was rather short at 5 feet 4 inches. He was employed by Brisbane Tramways. John was granted two days home leave in February before going to Sydney for training. He embarked on the “Port Sydney” on 17th August 1918 and disembarked in Suez one month later.
By the time John was taken on strength by the 11th Light Horse, the Turks and Germans in Palestine had capitulated and John spent the next few months in Egypt before being returned to Australia in July 1919 for discharge.
