BERNARD RUSSELL FRENCH, son of Sir John Russell
French, K.B.E. (General Manager of the Bank of New South Wales) and Lady Margaret Anne French, was born at Christchurch, New Zealand, on 21st March, 1884. He was educated at the Sydney Grammar School and subsequently proceeded to the Sydney University (St. Paul's College) where he took the degrees of B.A. and LLB.
He enlisted in September, 1914, as lieutenant in the Royal Munster Fusiliers (Service Battalion) and was promoted to the rank of captain in the Regular British Army in 1917. Brevet Major French saw service in Palestine, acting as lieutenant-colonel in charge of a battalion of the Royal Munster Fusiliers. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for his fine work at that time. He was mentioned in despatches by Sir Bryan Mahon and Sir Edward Allenby, and was awarded the Silver Medal of the Crown of Italy. For his services in Northern Russia he was promoted to the rank of brevet major.
