HE DIED FOR FREEDOM AND HONOUR
Lieutenant Landale was the youngest son of the late Mr Alexander Landale of Wandook, Denliiquin. He was born at Aroona, Toorak, and educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he took his degree. He received a commission in the Rifle Brigade in 1911. He was with the Sixth Division of the British Expeditionary Force, and had been in the firing line in Belgium and France almost since the outbreak of war.
The death has been announced in France of Lieutenant Douglas Blackwood Landale, son of the late Mr Alexander Landale of Wandook Station, Deniliquin. Lieutenant Landale left England with his regiment soon after the outbreak of war. According to particulars cabled, Lieut. Landale died fighting against great odds when derending the trenches, and set a great example of bravery. The body is buried at Armentieres, Northern France. His brother Captain George Landale, of Dahwilly, left Denliquin for England to take part in the war in August last.
W. W. Moore and Sons have completed the alterations to St. Andrew's Church, which include a stained glass window, the gift of Mrs Landale, as a memorial to the late Alexander Landale and his son Douglas Blackwood Landale, killed in action at the Battle of the Marne. The subject. The Lord's Supper, is very appropriate, and is as true as possible a copy of the famous picture painted by Leonardo de Vince, in Milan. Mrs Landale placed the order for the glass with Messrs Brooks, Robinson and Co., Ltd., of Melbourne, the result being another of their marked successes, and we doubt very much if its equal is to be found in Australia. The church in terior has been newly decorated and the walls diapered, which gives the work a pleasing appearance. This class of work is educational, and anyone interested in such art would do well to visit the church, where they will see some very fine drawing and coloring, and we hope to see more of its kind in Deniliquin. Great credit is due to the architect (Mr Louis Harrison) and all concerned in the carrying out of the work.
