1302 Corporal Arthur James Langbein described the last moments of Sgt Coady. On July 19-20th at Fromelles, the Battalion was digging a sap, and as soon as Sgt Coady had dug deep enough to afford cover, he gave his place up to another and went on digging. He was killed while thus exposing himself. He gave up one place to Cpl. Burgess A.Co.
He describes Sergeant Coady as a New Zealander " He was a hero if ever there was one"
Lieut. John Henry Facey describes Sgt Coady as "a hero who was thought very highly of by his men"
Younger brother 30544 Private Maurice Howard Coady served with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force during WW1. He survived the war and was discharged in 1919.
