Arthur Gordon Bowen enlisted in February 1916 and went in to Claremont Camp at Hobart as a member of the 40th Battalion. He died 27th June 1916 at the Hobart General Hospital from spinal cerebro meningitis and was buried in Cornelian Bay Public Cemetery, Hobart, Tasmania.

His two older brothers died serving in the AIF. 1953 Cpl. Percy James Bown 21st Brigade Australian Field Artillery was killed in action 14 November 1916, aged 32 and 2044 Pte. Charles John Bowen 40th Battalion AIF was killed in action near Passchendaele on 13 October 1917, aged 29.

It was unknown where is mother was when he died but his father James Bowen, of H.M. Customs office in Launceston, posted the following death notice,

"BOWEN. -On June 27, 1916, at Hobart, Private Arthur Gordon Bowen, of the Australian Imperial Force, and dearly loved youngest son of James Bowen, of George- street and H.M. Customs, Launceston, late of Hobart, aged 21 years."
