Great Sydney Central Station Honour Board
Alfred Fredrick BUTTERS, (Serial Number 2572) was born on 20 June 1886, in Sidmouth, Exeter, England. He began work for the NSW Railways as a porter in the Traffic Branch in the Newcastle District on 23 December 1913, becoming permanent in May the following year. On 1st July 1915 he was granted leave to join the Expeditionary Forces and on 18 July he enlisted in the AIF. Butters was unmarried.
He embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT ‘Euripides’, on 2 November 1915, and was taken on the strength of the 19th Battalion in the ‘Canal Zone’ in February 1916. He proceeded to join the British Expeditionary Forces in France through Alexandria, reaching Marseilles in late March.
He died of wounds received in action, a gunshot wound in the back, on 28 July 1916, and is buried in Puchevillers Military Cemetery, Picardie, France.
His mother, Alice Butters, of Ottery St.Mary, Devon UK was denied a pension derived from her son’s war service, as she could not prove dependence, and had adequate means of support.

He was 30 and the son of Fredrick Daniel and Alice Butters, of 19, Ridgeway Cottages, Ottery St. Mary, Devon.
He is honoured on the Sidmouth War Memorial where his surname is inscribed as Butter-that was how his birth was registered.

He is also honoured on the Ottery St. Mary – St. Mary’s Church War Memorial where his surname is inscribed as Butter-that was how his birth was registered. That spelling also appears on the Sidmouth War Memorial. He enlisted under the name of Butters but the 1891 census shows the family name as Butter.
